How safe is your quantified self? Candid Wueest and Jonathan Omansky from Symantec Security Response talk about Symantec’s research into several popular self-tracking apps and devices like Fitbit, Jawbone, Runkeeper, MapMyRun and others. Symantec has found security risks in a large number of self-tracking devices and smartphone applications. Some smartphone apps contacted up to 14 external domains, sharing information, and many of these connections were unsecure. Examples of data shared could be “GPS coordinates,” “account information,” “photos,” and other “health” based information.
